Alena Elizabeth VanEssendelft, nee Slager, of West Sayville, died on January 12, 2011. Mrs. VanEssendelft was a resident of West Sayville all of her life until she moved to the Holland Christian Home in North Haledon, New Jersey, where she spent her last five years. Mrs. VanEssendelft was a lifelong member of the West Sayville Reformed Bible Church and was very active in the West Sayville Christian School Auxillary.

Mrs. Van Essendelft is survived by her six children Richard  and his wife Sylvia, Lawrence and his wife Jutta, Dan and his wife Martha, Beverly Smid and her husband Robert, Louis and his wife Brenda and Melvin and his wife Joy, as well as her seventeen grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sisters; Esther Wessels and Elizabeth Holmes and her brother, Arthur Slager.  She was pre-deceased by her husband Dirk, her son Dan’s wife Barbara, and her brother, Clarence.

Friends and relatives gathered on Friday at the Bayport-Blue Point Funeral Home in Bayport A religious service was held on Saturday, January 15th at the West Sayville Reformed Bible Church and the interment followed at Union Cemetery in Sayville.
